Studio Brief 2- Professional Presense

Study Task 2- Position

For my online presence I am working across many different social networks, I have chosen to work on Twitter, Linkedin, Vimeo and Instagram

I find using twitter to be a great way to promote your work but also having the chance to link up your other profiles which gives people a chance to see other social networks, which you may be posting to more. I also use twitter to get in contact with other practitioners and show my support by retweeting their work, which spreads it across a wider audience.

Ive just recently started using Vimeo as I have had trouble trying to place my work on this platform because the file sizes are restricted to 500 mb, I would much prefer to use Vimeo as a platform for me to upload my work on as there are a lot more creative practitioners on here

I have found using Linked in really helpful as I am able to connect with people from around the work who specialise in areas of work in which I might be interested in working with, I think this will benefit myself and my work in the future, especially with helping me find a job in the animation industry

Instagram is probably the social media I use the most as I am able to post doodles, character designs and backgrounds along with keeping people who follow me updated with what I am doing such as exhibitions and art galleries, I have found that Instagram have a wider illustration audience which is great for me to showcase my pre-production work.

Study Task 2- Position

This is my final showreel that shows various styles of 2D animations, I hope that with my animations showing diversity in style will help me for when I apply to studios as I am able to adapt my work. I have published my showreel on all social medias to ensure that I am showcasing my work to as many people as possible.

Study task 2- Position

I had worked alongside Alice Morris from graphic design for my business cards as she had helped me with font and placement. I wanted to keep my business cards simple so I had decided to stick with a similar style to my 1930's aesthetic animation. Having business cards will benefit me when I go to Annecy animation festival and will hopefully connect with a network of people that I can work with in the future.

Study Task 2- Position

So far this is my professional CV, it states who I am as a person and what areas of animation I would like to continue to work in as I believe that they are my strongest pieces of work, my CV also explains what experience I have had such as submitting work into monthly competitions.

I am wanting to update my professional CV before applying to studios as I don't believe that this is very strong but I also want to build up more experience before doing so, I plan on doing this by finishing some Freelance work, in the hopes that this will make my CV stronger

Study Task 1- Research

These are shots of my presentation that demonstrates I had researched into creative practitioners and companies, this was to give me a better understanding of what work was out there and what studios I could later apply to. I researched into Arcus animation and creative conspiracy because of the advertisement work that have done in the past as I would like to try and go into advertising. Folimage is another studio that has worked on Idents as they had created the Annecy 2017 Ident

Passion Pictures I had researched after finding out that they had worked with McBess, I really like their backgrounds and 2D animations again Passion Pictures is a studio I would be happy to apply to. I later started talking about what exhibitions I would like to attend and festivals such as Tove Jansson moomin exhibition in london and Anecy festival in June, the last slide is about the Late night work club as I like the idea of having a normal day job to then come home and animate, I researched into them because If I don't succeed with getting into an animation studio I would like to try keeping up with Freelance work after hours.

Studio Brief 1- Professional Presentation

This the Professional Presentation I had done. I had spoken about how I wasn't really happy with my work from the past two years but this has made me realise that I am probably looking at applying for jobs in the future for concept art and backgrounds. I think my main problem is that I don't have much confidence in the work that I have produced, so I have looked into going to some workshops abroad as I think that taking these workshops will be beneficial towards my work.

I then spoke about what I will be doing after Uni, which will be attending Annecy animation festival which will give me the opportunity to network and make some connections with other animators/ illustrators. I also have a work opportunity with a post grad business and advertising student from Nottingham Trent university to create a storyboard and animatic for a Paul Smith advertisement.

On the next slide I mentioned all the practitioners I had recently got in contact with and how the responce from Reece Parker had changed my mind slightly as I was wanting to become a Freelance animator before Starting in a studio but he suggested that working in a studio first is more beneficial

Lastly I spoke about my online presence and how the main social media's I use are Twitter, Youtube and Instagram. I would like to use Vimeo more instead of Youtube but because Vimeo is restricted on file sizes It has made it difficult for me to get my work on there.

Studio Brief 1- A Creative strategy

I received for responses from Freelance animators than Studios and again the emails I had received were really helpful

This is the email and response from Freelance animator Reece Parker, I found his email really helpful as I was wanting to go straight into Freelance work until I have built a portfolio of work I was confident with but Reece had suggested that going straight into working in a studio was probably the best way as you learn the ins and outs of working in an animation studio

Email to Animator/ Illustrator Mcbess

Email to Freelance animator oliver sin

Message I had sent to Kavan Magsoodi on instagram

Again not everyone got back in touch with me but I am happy with the responses that I received

I had got in contact with a 2D Freelance animator on Instagram called Knifeson, they were really helpful towards giving me advise and even suggest other practitioners I should look into

Studio Brief 1- A Creative strategy

When emailing studios and practitioners I wrote down a set of questions and emailed the same questions to each studio, this was because I wanted to know how each studio would respond differently and what advise they had to offer

This is the email I had sent to Nice shit studios in Barcelona, unfortunately they have not yet replied to my email but hopefully in the future they do as I would like to plan a studio visit and later apply to work there.

Email to form play studios

Email to Passion Pictures

Email to Pun Animation

Unfortunately the emails above are ones that I did not get a response from, but I will try to keep networking with them

I had emailed We are Wednesday studios and I was really happy to have had a reply so quickly, they were really friendly and very helpful with their response! it's gave me a better understanding of what steps I should be taking next for applying for Jobs and what studios are looking for, I plan on keeping in touch which with We are Wednesday studio's as I really like the work they have produced and would also like to apply for a Job

Studio Brief 1- A creative strategy

I decided to try and improve my traditional painting skills, as I had thought this would benefit me in the future when I decided to use this for a background in my animation. I had watched a couple of Bob Ross episodes, to create these paintings. For these paintings I had used acrylic paint which I am use to using. but I would like to try and continue this but using a different medium in the future.

Studio Brief 3- Life a pitch

For the brief  'Life's a pitch' me and two of my course mates Brogan Dudley and Jay foster have started a collaborative group called Starr collective, our main aim is to use the exhibition space to network and possible collaborate with other colleges. We plan on having a projection on a wall with three panels demonstrating the fundamentals of animation , which would be a walk cycle where each frame is different and in a different style, a bouncing ball and a character turn around. and then have a contact sheet on the walls with the persons name underneath with their contact details. We plan on having the template for the walk cycle and then getting people on the animation course to each design a frame, in the hopes that everyones different styles of drawings will make it stand out. Because this is still early days

Studio Brief 2- Creative presence

Studio Brief 2- Creative presence

I had sent an email to Bo Mathorne  a film director and computer artist, he works both 3D and 2D animations. He studied at The Animation Workshop, and created The Backwater Gospel in his graduating year.  He has also worked with companies like Hydralab. Bo Mathorne has started his own company, Studio Kiboko.

Bo Mathorne is mostly known for his work such as The Blackwater gospel and a music video, Psalm of Withering, for Sons of Perdition.

these are the questions that I had emailed

What is your biggest inspiration for works like ‘The Backwater Gospel’?

What projects have you been working on since The Backwater Gospel?

What has been your best work/experience in your work so far?

In a previous interview with 1883 magazine you mention about starting your own studio soon, how has that gone so far?

unfortunately I did not get a response back  to this email.

Study Task 2- Personal SWOT analysis

We were required to to do a SWOT test on ourselves. I was unfortunately ill when the SWOT tests took place so I was unable to complete the other test where someone else will answer the same questions but about myself. I had drew up the test that I had to complete about myself, which made me think about what my strengths and weaknesses really were, I had found this quite difficult to write about my strengths with in my work because i'm so critical about my own work and I lack confidence with in my work.
