Evaluation

For the PPP briefs I really like the research brief as I think its a really good idea that we should know so many animations and practitioners, and doing this brief has helped me know and gather more information on these. Although i should of but more effort into this brief its self by continuously blogging about any animations that i have come across, which sometimes I would forget too, but I then made sure to blog about anything i come across and that i am interested in.

I also think the seminars in which we attended were very helpful, especially the presentation seminar. I found this the most interesting seminar, as i struggle to stand up in front of people and deliver a good presentation. For the studio brief 3, this is the presentation I stubbled the most to present as i got too nervous, and it came across as if I didn't know what i was saying and i had don't the brief at the last minute.

The things i have learnt the most after doing these briefs for PPP is that i need to continuously keep track of everything i do or watch, for example if i go to an exhibition or watch any animations that I'm interested in or i find animations that have inspired me to create my own animations in the future. I have also learnt from the research brief again that I need to keep track of what animations or practitioners i am researching, this is because in the summer i plan to create my own animations out of university with friends and these will all be placed on my PPP blog, and i will be able to keep my production diary here too.

I love the character designs for the character Stitch, this they have captured both the good and cute side of the character and the bad and mischievous side of him too, above shows a character sheet of Stitch in 2/3rd pose and below is another character sheet of some key poses, these key poses show some of the characters emotions too

Studio Brief 2- Research

The land before time is one of my childhood favorite animations, I just love the character designs for the film as the audience was mainly for children the main characters looked soft meaning you could tell which dinosaurs were nice as the lines of the characters wasnt as harsh as the others. I personally just think the characters in the films are really sweet and friendly looking.

For the animated film the Jungle book, I love the way the movements are captured for all the characters, but on the first character sheet above of Mowgli they have captured the movements for the scene where he is dancing amazingly, as they have kept the fact that these movements will be more exaggerated not only cause he is dancing but because he is a child too, and I personally think that if this was an adult in the scene the movements of the arms wouldnt be so extreme

Eric Goldberg

Eric Goldberg is an animator who has worked on many animations, but below are just 2 videos of his work which are completely different, the first video is a pixalation for a Rolo advert, in this animation a character is drawn out and then as the character is complete he comes to life. In the second video it is a pencil test of more than 1 scene of the Disney film, Princess and the frog, as Eric Goldberg was the animator for the character Louis the Alligator. I love this character in this film as he brings humour to the film, not only through the script but the actions of the character himself.

Dave Alex Riddett

In Dave Alex Riddett's guest talk he showed us one of his first pixalations, and then told us about he loves making things through cameras. This pixalation was for a music video and includes an armature character, this took him a week to create.

He also helpped make the Sledge hammer music video, and explained how they are currently trying to remake the video as they still have all the old negatives

Dave Alex Riddett also showed us in this guest talk a behinds the scenes video of the film Shaun the sheep, they expected to animate at least 2 seconds worth a day.

Presentation skills

-Communication of a story or journey
-Convey meaningful information
-Concisency

I should
-Know my audience
-Inform them about my work
-Explain who I am
-Explain what my role is
-what im doing as part of a project
-How i got there
-Work up with a sequence of things
-How to plan to move forward

Presentation is not
-About me
-About what you sound like
-Be stressful

I should be

-Prepared
-Keep it simple
-Know you subject
-Avoid clip art
-Use imagery when neccessary

I should not

-Use to much text
-Use bullet points

In this lecture I learnt the key things for a presentation, this is useful to me as I have poor presentation skills and have two presentations coming up in the future.

Studio Brief 2- Research

I love this video, as a Johnny Cash music lover, I think the concept of getting people from all around the word to draw each frame to create an animation for a Johnny Cash music video, and it works so well. The animation its self is amazing and so well put together, I think its such a good idea and that more people should be doing things like this more often

Studio Brief 2- Research

This is a short trailer of an animation by the Late night work club, I really like the idea of creating animations with other people after a day of going to work, especially coming up the the summer, I will be at work through out the day and me and two other friends are planning on creating animations together were you will be able to see the three different styles or our work throughout.

we cant live without cosmos

I think this is a really sweet animation about two friends who train to be astronauts, but then one of the gets sent out to space and dies, I think the character design in this animation is really simple and works really well with the animation its self as the animation is quite simple because it has no speech, only sound effects. I also think the story line comes across so well, as you understand everything that is going on, which sometimes can be hard with out any speech

Man O Man
By Simon Cartwright

I loved this animation when attending the Manchester animation festival, mainly because of its humor. I also really liked the characters in this animation too, the use of puppets really added to the animations humor as well.

Remaking of danger mouse

Part of me still prefers the old danger mouse because I grew up watching it as a child but in this talk at Manchester animation festival, they talked about the changes of the characters. Danger mouse himself has completely changed as his eye patch now acts as robotic spy camera thing, but as for Penfold he hasnt changed.

This animation, Meanwhile created by Stephan Mcnally was another animation that we got to watch whilst at the Manchester animation festival. I really like how in this animation each scene is different colours but the use of different shades is really effective. It shows you multiple people in their different lifestyles in their day to day surroundings such as a work office or people riding their bike through the street.

Studio Brief 2- Research

This short animation, Edmond, directed by Nina Grantz is about a man who isolates himself from everyone, in the animation it shows you why he does so though a series of Edmond's memories. I really like the idea of creating characters made out of wool as this is one of the main reasons I like this animation. This was one out of the many graduation films that I got to watch whist at the Manchester animation festival.

The stop motion film Anomalisa is quite weird and after the film had finished I didn't know what had actually gone on but all of the writers films are similar leaving you confused to what has actually gone on. Even though this film is a stop motion film it looks quite realistic, which I really liked about this film. The film also has some funny scenes such as when he visits the hotel manager and where he confesses his love to the main character.

Studio Brief 2- Research

Shaun the sheep the movie was quite comical, as the film is about Shaun and all the other sheep traveling to the city to go rescue the farmer, as hes lost his memory and leading a different lifestyle. After watching this film it changed my thoughts on Shaun the sheep and other Aardman films because before I never really liked them or the way they looked, but the film was quite funny and I did enjoy watching it.

After Tomm Moores masterclass I watched his film, Song of the sea. The film is about two young Irish children, Ben and Saoirse, who go on adventure trying to save the spirit world. The whole look of this film is amazing, as the watercoloured backgrounds really give the look of the film some depth. Another thing I really like about how this film looks is how none of the colours used are over powering, but they're quite subtle.

Tomm Moore- Masterclass

In the masterclass, Tomm Moore talks about how he was inspired to create the film, Song of the sea, He says that it was the old stories of Selkies from Ireland and Scotland. Tomm also talked about the process of creating Song of the sea. Song of the sea is both a mixture of traditional pencil and watercolour  and computer techniques, as the animation was mainly done in Tv paint with added effects. He based most of the characters on his own family members, such as the character Ben was based off his own son called Ben. The film combines traditional Irish music with an orchestral score.

The little prince

This animated film combines both 3D and stop motion animation. The story of this film is that, a little girl who spends her life getting taught how to be a perfect adult, following a strict study schedule, when she meets her next door neighbor who tells her the story of the little prince. I really like how in this film when the old man who lives next door tells the young girl the story, the film changes from 3D animation to traditional stop motion animation. The change in animation techniques throughout the film make it clear when the story is being told and it also makes the film a lot more interesting to watch.
